I’m horrible at business. No, seriously. I break one of the cardinal rules all the time – I give away free sessions. Now, I reserve these for very special occasions like this one – Alyssa and Blake’s Engagement. I’ve known Alyssa since middle school. We’ve been about 600+ miles apart for the past 6 years, but we still keep in touch and pick up like it was another lunch break of high school senior year. After Alyssa had finished telling me how Blake proposed – I immediately offered to do their engagement session for free. Well, as a wedding gift (does that mean I didn’t break the business rules?). When they asked for an artsy, urban look – I knew the perfect location.
The Beltline between Piedmont Park and Krog Street Market is tricky for environmental portraits. There’s a ton of people, new construction dotting the skyline, lots of residences and businesses lining the path, and sporadic greenery in October. It’s amazing to shoot because of all the graffiti, the artwork, and bridges, the ever-changing scenery, and open spaces. I’ve gone out and gotten crap and then I have sessions like this where we NAIL IT. I brought my trusty Magmod kit (grids and gels) and a 28″ softbox to cover my bases for lighting. Photographers, if you’re a speedlight shooter and haven’t discovered Magmod yet, it’s like going from the Stone Age to the Industrial Revolution.
Now, typically I would break down the session and how it went, but Alyssa did my job for me and wrote an amazing review. So I’m going to let her speak for me:
“Mike and I have been friends since middle school so I was super excited when he agreed to do our engagement shoot in Atlanta! My fiancé and I really wanted an urban background with unique shots and Mike nailed it. He suggested the Atlanta Beltline and Krog Street Tunnel which were perfect for getting some really artsy shots. He was able to integrate the art pieces and architecture to get us some beautiful and unique photos. Mike also is a magician with lighting and was able to make some of our night shots look like sunset! Additionally, I really appreciated the quick posing tutorial that Mike gave us to make the session run smoothly and had us focus more on connecting and being ourselves without having to worry so much about our body positions. I was incredibly happy with the quality and the diversity of shots. We had trouble picking just one for our save the date and ended up making several collages and even canvas prints because we loved them so much. As an added bonus Mike had our photos edited and returned within 2 weeks. Can’t recommend him enough!”
I am so excited for Alyssa and Blake – and an excuse to go to NOLA for their wedding! Congrats again you guys and see you in a few months!
