I love shooting Southeast Asian Weddings and Engagement sessions because there’s so much color! Sangita and Tushar’s engagement party definitely fulfilled that crush of mine. They were also a blast to work with. Both of them went to my alma mater, Georgia Tech, and we instantly bonded over the shenanigans of those days.
One of my favorite aspects of this session was just how much fun Sangita and Tushar had with each other. They could have been having Date Night for all they cared, I just happened to be taking pictures. I’d like to take credit and say that I’m simply awesome and create an amazingly comfortable space and mood in which to work, but I know the truth is that these two are just that crazy about each other. If you’ve never attended a Southeast Asian wedding or engagement, you’re really missing out. They are beautiful visually and also in tradition. I’m always grateful when the priest translates the ceremony to English because there’s a ton of rich history and meaning behind everything in their cultures. I really enjoy it.
My favorite images are the ones we captured on the outside sidewalk. I’m a sucker for outdoor portraits and I had a lot of fun adding a bit of flash while shooting these images to really make the colors pop. Natural light is tricky to get real colors with, because of the sun’s position. For vibrant colors, the sun has to be at a photographer’s back and lighting the subject AKA majorly squinty people. Many photographers shoot in the shade or with the sun behind their subject to counteract this, but it subdues the colors. Solution? Add a bit of flash to the second scenario and BAM! Full, rich colors are screaming again.
